Radio frequency detection in a tower is noisy work, and separating a genuine transmitter from the building’s own equipment is most of the job.

Freestanding houses at Castle Hill, Kellyville, Glenmore Park or Menai are electrically quieter but much larger, with more rooms, more ceiling space and a garage full of storage nobody has touched in years. Those sweeps take longer because there is more house to cover.

Vehicles come up constantly, because Sydney people live in their cars. Something parked overnight on a street in Balmain or Randwick, or in an open driveway anywhere, is easy for someone to reach at two in the morning. We check the usual concealment points and the underside as a matter of course.

Commercial sweeps cluster in the CBD, North Sydney, Macquarie Park and Parramatta, and are nearly always done after hours or on a weekend, when the floor is empty and the building’s own systems are the only thing talking. That timing also stops the sweep becoming office gossip by Monday.

What does a bug sweep in Sydney cost?

It is priced on the size of the property and the number of rooms, not on the suburb. A one-bedroom apartment in Chatswood is a much shorter attendance than a five-bedroom house out at Dural. Tell us the property type, the room count and whether a vehicle is included.

Can you sweep an apartment in a Sydney high-rise?

Yes, and it is a large share of what we do. High-rise work is more technically involved because of building wi-fi, neighbouring networks and shared services, so the radio frequency stage takes longer. The full three checks still run, including the hands-on search of fittings, outlets and smoke alarms.

What sort of devices do you actually find?

Most often small cameras built into ordinary objects such as clocks, chargers and smoke alarms, audio recorders left sitting in a room, and trackers under vehicles. Devices are cheap and easy to buy now, which is why we search physically as well as electronically rather than relying on a scan.

Should I have my car swept as well as my house?

Usually yes, especially if you park on the street or in an open driveway. Given how many hours Sydney drivers spend commuting between the west and the city, a vehicle often gives away more about a person’s movements than their home ever would. We can do both in a single visit.
