The Midland Highway is the spine that joins the two ends, about 200 kilometres and two and a half hours between Hobart and Launceston through Kempton, Oatlands, Ross and Campbell Town. The east coast is reached by the Tasman Highway, with St Helens roughly two hours from Launceston. The west is another matter again. The Lyell Highway climbs out of Hobart through the Central Highlands and takes about four hours to reach Queenstown, and beyond that thin line of road the south west is largely trackless with no towns at all. Weather is a working factor rather than scenery. Winter daylight is short, with dark closing in not long after half past four in June, fog settles in the Derwent and Tamar valleys, and the west coast sees rain most days of the year.

Hobart holds a large share of the state’s people once Kingston, Glenorchy and the eastern shore are counted, so most Tasmanian matters begin there. Outside Hobart

Almost everything in Tasmania counts as regional by mainland standards, but the working divisions are clear enough. Launceston is the second base and covers the Tamar, the north east and, at a stretch, the east coast down to St Helens. The north west coast from Devonport through Ulverstone to Burnie is a corridor of about fifty kilometres, easy to work along and very hard to work discreetly in, because the towns are small and the Bass Highway is the only real route between them. Smithton and the far north west add another hour and a half beyond Burnie. Kingston, Sorell and New Norfolk sit close enough to Hobart to be treated as part of it. Queenstown and the west coast are not. The Lyell Highway is around four hours from Hobart, there is nowhere to blend in once you arrive, and a job there is planned as a multi-day trip or not taken on at all. The honest position is this. On-ground work outside Hobart and Launceston needs notice, usually several days, and it costs more because of the travel.
