Ballarat is about a hundred and fifteen kilometres west on the Western Freeway, Bendigo a hundred and fifty north on the Calder, and Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley a hundred and sixty five east. Those four are the backbone, and all four have V/Line services as well as road. North of the divide, Shepparton sits in the Goulburn Valley among orchards and dairy country, while Wodonga sits on the Murray at the end of the Hume, three hours out and looking across at Albury. West, the Western Highway runs through the Wimmera to Horsham and on toward Adelaide, and the country dries out fast. Warrnambool anchors the south west coast, reached either by the quick inland run or the slow Great Ocean Road, which is not a road anyone can follow a car along discreetly. The real outlier is Mildura, five hundred and forty kilometres north west in the Mallee, closer to Adelaide than to Melbourne and hot enough in summer to change how long a person can sit in a parked car. In the north east the Alps add altitude, snow and roads that close.

Melbourne

Melbourne and its metro area hold most of the state’s population and most of our Victorian workload. The city has conditions that matter to this work: the CBD grid and its hook turns, a tram network that moves people without a car, and the difference between an inner north terrace with a laneway behind it and a Point Cook street with one way in and out. Outside Melbourne

Working regional Victoria comes down to the freeway network and the fact that nowhere in this state is genuinely remote. Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Traralgon are close enough that we treat them as day work. Shepparton and Wodonga are longer but still comfortable inside a day each way, and a two or three day block will cover most matters in either. Warrnambool and Horsham take more of the day in driving than in working, so we plan them as trips rather than call outs.

Mildura is the exception. It is around five and a half hours from Melbourne through the Mallee, and once you are there everything is spread out, from Wentworth across the river to the surrounding blocks. We would rather send an agent for several days and do the job once.

Two practical points. The smaller the town, the shorter the time before a parked car becomes interesting to a neighbour, so we rotate vehicles and positions more often outside the metro area. And in summer the north of the state gets seriously hot, which makes a long static observation in Mildura or Swan Hill in February a different proposition to the same job in Ballarat in September. None of that stops the work. It means the timing conversation happens before we start rather than afterwards.

Do you cover regional Victoria or only Melbourne?

Both. Melbourne is the bulk of our work, but the regional centres are close by mainland standards and we travel to them regularly. Background checks, phone number searches and locating people are done remotely and can start the day you ask, wherever in the state you are. Surveillance and bug sweeping need an agent on site, so those get scheduled around travel.

How quickly can an investigator get to Geelong or Ballarat?

Usually the same day. Geelong is about an hour down the Princes Freeway and Ballarat a little over an hour on the Western, so neither needs an overnight stay. Bendigo and Traralgon are much the same. That is one of the genuine advantages of working in this state: the four biggest regional cities all sit inside a comfortable morning’s drive.

Can you take on a job in Mildura or the Victorian Mallee?

Yes, with notice. Mildura is roughly five and a half hours from Melbourne, so we treat it as a multi day trip rather than a drive out and back. Does surveillance in Victoria cost more outside the city?

The work itself is priced the same way everywhere. What changes is travel, and for the further centres, accommodation. Because the state is compact, that component is smaller here than almost anywhere else in Australia, and for Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo or Traralgon it is often minimal.
